The Country’s Future

Is it just me or is everyone concerned that a major US bank was ready to close. How could anyone sitting on the board of a major bank not ’see’ the numbers and let it go as far as it did? These are the bean counters that are suppose to ‘protect’ their customers interests – MONEY.

I can not believe that these ‘bodies’ have not made bunches of money the past few years – I wonder if anyone has looked. And how many sold their stock before the meltdown? I have not checked real close but you would figure a story like that would have made headlines on one of the news sites.

Last night I was listening to some talk radio while doing other things and someone was reporting there were several banks in trouble. They may not be as big but they were still charged with protecting their clients interests. We have banks ready to close – WHY – where are the safeguards? Does the federal government watch the banks? I sure thought they did.

This talking head also pointed out that the FDIC, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation only protects the first $100,000 in a bank – or in that account – or is that per person per bank – I have not bothered to look since I do not have to worry about that. What happens if several banks fail and JP Morgan does not step in? How long will it be before many of the banks are owned by overseas interests? How far can the dollar fall before the government does something other then telling us to spend more money?

Stock holders have to be fuming – unless they made a ton of money and knew enough or saw the signs to sell out. A complete audit of the banking industry would be nice. But then again maybe we would not want to know te results.

Everyday I see the “new” society trying to milk whatever they can for as much as they can without ‘worrying’ about the future or the other people they might hurt. Their actions remind me of cutthroat tatics used by salespeople to make that last sale – no matter what.

As soon as strong arm tactics are put in play or the people show a complete lack of caring – I’m done. There is nothing I need that badly to let someone screw me over. I still believe in ‘The customer comes first’ theory – if you want to stay in business. But I see a lot of businesses that only stick around long enough to screw whoever they can and take as much as they can then shutdown – sometimes without even bothering to file bankruptcy or tell any governing bodies. What a bunch of crap.

We hear people advertising or spouting off about these carbon credits but who is making the money? People are giving money to someone or something and all they are getting back is a ‘good feeling’ or a sense of peace when they fill up their SUV with $120 of gas or ethanol.

Most of the young people I talk to are more worried about getting the latest cell phone model or newest SUV or luxury car. They want bigger houses with pools; stainless steel grills on the over-sized decks; biggest and brightest TVs with the latest surround sound;DVD collections – many of which they only watch once; I pods filled with more music then they can possibly listen to in years; and most of it they are charging to their use-to-be low interest credit cards. Many of these people owe more then their net worth. Who taught them this? Their parents?

They have no idea the housing market has faltered in most places. They have no idea where Iraq is or how much the war costs or how many people have died in the war – on either side. The stock market is for the future. Many have never had savings accounts. Many do not know what a CD is anymore – I’m talking about the investment CD.

Many overdraw their accounts -wait for the next automatic deposit to hit and lose $20 or $30 dollars a day in overdraft fees. Then bitch when their cell phone is turned off for non-payment.

I am concerned that the financial future of the normal person – let alone the country – is screwed. And a few minutes ago I read the Social Security and Medicare is in deep trouble. I think we should all take a close look at what is really going on.

I read that a local governing board just approved a 400% increase in sewer rates without any public input. And that early in their term they voted themselves a raise that gives them $1000 paycheck for each meeting – once a month. So we are paying these guys $12,000 a year to “protect us”. And to add insult to injury – when most people can not afford health insurance – they get it with the job – don’t know if they copay or not but knowing this city, they probably have no health costs at all.

They were all appointed by the powers that be – they must be really smart people – yeah, they only know how to take care of themselves. And they have done a fine job.

It sure looks to me that all politicians – yes I said all -are out for only themselves -many are good at hiding the end result and help people all they can – I call them yes men. Don’t get me wrong – there are some good ones – they really care about the country, city or county’s needs – they just want theirs first. I just don’t get it.
